Drawn from life, Daisy Craddock's diptychs are studies of fruits and vegetables. Although at first glance, they might appear to be abstract blocks of color, closer observation shows they are literal depictions of their subjects – skin on the left side, and flesh on the right. Using oil stick and oil pastel, Craddock layers the colors in varied tones and hues, scraping and burnishing to achieve subtle gradations of color and texture.
The works are visually exciting and intellectually stimulating, providing what Craddock refers to as the "aha" moment, when the viewer identifies the fruit or vegetable in an instant of recognition and revelation.
