The seashore has a number of associations. It can recall the joys of summertime -- picnics and sunbathing, long walks along the beach, and the quiet contemplation of the distant horizon. The sea can be serene and calming, or tempestuous and forbidding.
In our time, it is difficult to observe these scenes without mixed emotions -- nostalgia for those summers past, as well as a sense of foreboding and potential loss due to the threat of climate change and rising sea levels.
Each of the artists whose work is included have a unique relationship with water, its imagery and its deeper meanings.
